Dear Professor Styopin:

If it is convenient for you, I would like to arrange a visit
to the Institute of Philosophy for the week of April 8 to April 16.
If you like I could give three lectures, the first on nonmonotonic
reasoning, the second on formalizing common sense knowledge and
the third on the relations between artificial intelligence and
philosophy. I have a commitment to visit England the previous week,
so I have a strong preference for that time, because it's such a
long trip from California.

I am sorry I had to postpone my visit, but I was far behind
on some writing commitments, because of the unexpected trip to Japan
in connection with receiving the Kyoto Prize.

I would also be interested in visiting people outside the
Institute of Philosophy with whom I might have common interests.

Vladimir Lifschitz of our department would also be a good
lecture on nonmonotonic reasoning, and his visit has been discussed
with Dr. Smirnov. He could come either the same week as I will or
two weeks later, i.e. from April 24 to April 28. As it happens, he
has a commitment in England from April 16 to April 20. He wants to
go to Leningrad also. If he goes to Moscow at the same time I do,
he would go to Leningrad the week before, whereas if he goes after
I do, then he would like to go to Leningrad the week after he goes
to Moscow.

\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Professor
